Canterbury rugby club on the brink of relegation

words by Nicolas Verdier

With seven games to go, the end of the season is going to be a stressed one for Canterbury rugby club.

Currently just above the relegation line in 13th position, the city club have just seven games to avoid a relegation in National League 3 London & South East division.

However, to do so, they must stop this 12 games losing streak and win at least three games of the remaining seven to secure their place in National League 2 next season.

“This has been quite a frustrating period for us. We are playing a good rugby but we cannot get the victory. We are always in the game after half time but then we are shooting ourselves in the foot by giving away easy points,” Number 8 Wim Baars said.
The fight back will start on Saturday when they host Lydney. Canterbury only lost to them by a point earlier this season so the victory is a realistic outcome if everything finally comes together and they could put pressure on Shelford who is 12th but only three point ahead.

“We should never be in this position with the rugby we are playing. There is only the top three or four teams that are above everyone else but we could have beaten the other teams which is very annoying,” the New-Zealander added.

Canterbury have a good chance to avoid relegation as they receive bottom club Newbury on April 23rd before hosting 14th and in relegating position Westcombe Park on May 7th for the last game of the season in what will probably be a very tense game as the losing team will probably be relegated.
